TODOS SOMOS MX

Disaster reconstruction in Puebla.

Due to the earthquakes that occurred in September 2017 in different locations of Mexico, we created the “TODOS SOMOS MX” campaign, which aims to help two affected communities in Puebla, México. This will be achieved by working with them to rebuild their communities and overcome poverty by following sustainable and lasting processes. We are focusing our efforts on the communities of “San José del Platanar” and “San Miguel de la Toma”. The disaster damaged these communities very badly and they did not receive the consequent help. Furthermore, before the earthquake, they were living in poverty and vulnerable conditions.

After few visits, community members agreed to work with us and together we made a diagnose, that helped us to define a process and solutions community can overcome poverty and rebuild their place.

El Platanar

San José del Platanar is a rural community of approximately 150 people located in Puebla, México.

ACTUAL SITUATION

Destroyed houses: 48 / 100 – Affected houses: 70 / 100

The affected homes are now being rebuilt by private donors and the government, but with the earthquake, they lost their community center, in which they devised handicraft activities key to their economy. Without this center, its economy is weakened since this was the bakery and sewing workshop of the community, two of the strongest sources of income of this place. That is why our community work will focus and start our effort on working together with the community to rebuild their heritage with active participation and providing the necessary resources they need to do this.

La Toma

San Miguel la Toma is a community of approximately 900 people located in la Mixteca region in Puebla, México.

ACTUAL SITUATION

Affected houses that haven´t been intervened: 10 / 174

Most of the affected homes are now being rebuilt by private donors and the government, but there are some that are very damaged that to date haven´t received any help from the government or private donors. Their school has been very damaged due to the natural disaster and their economy is weak.

Partners

For now, we are carrying out this reconstruction project with the ¨Platanar¨ group, a group of young people from Monterrey, lead by Arq. Fernanda Rosas and Rodrigo Legorreta Balderas. In Puebla, we made an alliance with a team led by Anahí Espinoza, who is a resident of Chietla. We also count on expert`s advice, like the architect Benjamín Valdez Hernández who is a teacher in the Universidad de Monterrey, UDEM, and the architect Edgar Rodrigo Librado Arias.
